Finding Purpose and Meaning In Life: Living for What Matters Most

Do you find yourself redesigning, or reinventing, yourself occasionally? Going back to the drawing board to find out who you are and why you’re doing what you’re doing? I seem to feel the urge to renew my inner clarity every so often (doing the math from my last three rounds, I seem to go through it every eight months or so).

Your Life Purpose Is A Course Set By Love

It’s like refinishing furniture. You strip down all the finishes you’ve applied over the years until you’re at bare wood, get it sanded nice and smooth, and then build it back up from there. It’s the same inside you – you have to get the old gunk off before you can see the beauty of your original nature.

When you find yourself questioning your business, or your approach to productivity, or even how you spend your leisure time, know that it is a fruitful process, no matter how it looks. Each of us needs time to reflect, to take stock of who we are and where we are going.

Without hundreds of little “course corrections”, pilots and captains could easily miss their destination by hundreds or thousands of miles.

And without our own “course corrections”, how would we know that we are going to end up where we want to go?

Let’s look at the process together.

Pilots and captains have a compass, sextant, constellations, or (these days) a GPS, to true themselves up to. It’s how they define where they are in relation to everything else.

Without a compass pointing North, the north star, or the horizon, how would a captain know which way to steer the ship? Likewise, without something to true yourself up against, how can you be certain that your course corrections are taking you where you want to go?

When I think of an individual’s true north, I can think of only one thing: your experience of the Truth. I’m not talking about what you believe to be true, based on logic or reason. Oh, no.

I’m talking about resonating-in-your-bones Truth, the Truth as talked about by the mystics and sages of all time. The word, “Truth,” is a synonym for the Divine Presence, and it is that eternal Oneness that each of us, by definition, trues ourselves up against.

It is the Ordering Principle of Creation, the Way of life, the One, the Everlasting. What else could be your north? Because regardless of how you define it, It defines you.

Even if you don’t believe in a God the way others do (and who does?), you have a Creator – call it Nature, call it Allah, call it Cosmic Consciousness, whatever – you came from something, and it is in relation to that something you define your existence.

Your relationship to your Creator is your magnetic pull, your horizon line. And how define that relationship is how you determine your place in the world.

In Sufism, the relationship is defined as “lovers of the Beloved,” and as “servants of the Master.” What these two statements mean is that Sufis see themselves as being dependent on God as a servant is, a servant whose place is to be watchful, attentive, and responsive to the Will of God.

And yet also, through the analogy of the lover and Beloved, shows that this is not a relationship of burden and toil, but of the highest loving intent. Sufis choose a life of loving service, fulfilling their soul’s yearning for connection in each moment.

Looking through the lens of love, then…

If your north is the Divine, and the desire to serve and love is your magnetism, then that leaves you with three questions:

  1. What kind of ship are you? (Who are you?)
  2. What gifts, or cargo, has your ship been given to give? (What are your gifts?)
  3. Where are you taking your cargo? (Where are you going to apply all this? Where are you going to share your gifts?)

The search is as important as the answers

How do you know that the answers you come up with are real? Hey, this is life, remember? There are no guarantees when you set sail that you’ll get where you’re headed, or that the weather will be agreeable, or that you’re even going to arrive.

What you can be assured of, however, is that if you are trusting your heart, and sharing your heart’s “cargo”, you will learn immensely. Ask any seasoned sailor about her adventures, and she’ll tell you: “It wasn’t what I thought it would be, but it was perfect.”

Choosing your course isn’t about right or wrong

Remember, it’s all about course corrections. You are free at any time to adjust your course accordingly. And, if you pay attention to your environment (both your inner feelings and your outer circumstances and lessons), you’ll do just fine.

Each time I go through the process, I learn something new. Every time I grow, heal, or re-examine what I believe to be true about myself, my work, and my direction in the world, I find places where I want to “course correct” who I believe myself to be, what my service is, and where I’m giving it.

Wishing you the best, cap’n!
